Let me start by saying I have a Nikon D40 for my personal use. It is incredible; I love it. It shoots perfectly in all conditions and is a dream to use (my undergrad is in photography/fine arts but I need none of those skills to get great images with the D40). However, this D3000 SUCKS! I got this for work, since we needed a good camera for marketing purposes, and it's atrocious. It has a LONG shutter delay - at least half a second, maybe longer - which means you WILL miss many shots - smiles will be fading smiles, IF YOU HAVE KIDS FORGET IT, etc... I did a three-day photo shoot - about 2,000 images - inside our building, with excellent professional supplemental lighting, etc and very very few of the images are usable, even with exposure correction in Photoshop. They are way too dark, and have tons of noise and multicolored grain. I am returning this and saving my company the money. Our OLD Canon is better than this clunker.
It might be OK outside, but even cellphone camera photos taken in sunlight look great. That is not a test.
