Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (White),2.0 out of 5 stars NOT small, NOT inexpensive, NOT great. ...

Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (White)Because of all the whining I've received because I DARED... to logically assess and compare this camera to other cameras not actually having used it, I spent yesterday shooting/comparing a 1j1 to my Lumix TS3 and Nikon D5100.

I spent a couple hours here writing a very detailed comparison between these 3 cameras and then Firefox crashed on me and I lost everything so now my review will be MUCH more brief and my edits to the previous Lumix ZS7 and D5100 sections will be minimal if at all.

This review is being written by a very active photographer that has been shooting professional film and digital photo gear for almost 30 years with extensive experience with PNS and Nikon DSLRs who has spent a serious day with the Nikon 1 camera and has reviewed the photos at 100% resolution on a calibrated 27" computer monitor. I absolutely appreciate the size and convenience that PNS cameras offer and currently own 6 PNS cameras. I am definitely NOT some snooty pro that shuns anything non-DSLR. I love my PNS cameras and am intimately familiar with them and came to own them after thorough comparison and experience. To give you an idea, I love and regularly use my Lumix ZS7, TS2 and TS3 but I got rid of a Ganon G12 almost as soon as I bought it because it was slow as hell and had really bad menus. I am not some beginner with stars in my eyes or schmuck that doesn't know cameras or what he is talking about.

In short, the Nikon 1 image quality was BARELY better than the $250 Lumix TS3, which happens to be shockproof to 2m and waterproof to 12m, has GPS, altimeter, compass and barometer. The Nikon 1's image quality was nowhere near as good as the D5100's. Not even near a Nikon D90's. ISO 400 is already noisy on the Nikon 1, particularly its RAW files.

The Nikon 1's COMPLETE lack of Scene Modes makes it unattractive to beginners and its terrible ergonomics, bad choice for button functions, NO customizable Fn button and HORRIBLE menu-driven system make it REALLY REALLY REALLY unappealing to photographers who make settings changes regularly or even shot-to-shot the way I do.

To clarify about Scene Modes; Nikon claims to have 5 Scene Modes in this camera: Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Close-up, Auto. However, you CANNOT access any specific one. You MUST select Auto Scene Mode in which the CAMERA chooses one of those Scene Modes based on what's in front of it. So, the only actual exposure modes on the camera are P, A, S, M and Auto Scene. I generally shoot in A mode and play with exposure compensation. This isn't a horribly bad way to shoot on this camera but it is pretty bad. You toggle a little switch at the top right rear to adjust aperture and click then spin a dial for exposure compensation. Spinning the dial is horrible. It is a wasted feature that will cause way more errors than speed things up. Don't do it. Click the rocker up and down instead. Shooting P on this camera is really the way to go. OH YEAH! It can't even bracket exposures!!! NO BRACKETING, Nikon??? WTF??? Geez, even sub-$100 cameras can bracket, I think...

The only people I can see buying this camera as a main or only camera for taking pictures (I'm not assessing video performance as I don't shoot video nor do I care about it) and being happy with it are those who will make few if any changes from default, leave those settings alone, and then just shoot in either P or Auto Scene EXACTLY as a PNS shooter would. The TS3 and all Lumixes and pretty much all other PNS cameras in existence have better ergonomics and menus. I'm not kidding. I am dead serious. I did play around with one of the Nikon 1's direct competitors, the Sony NEX-5n and, though stylish and with a nice grip and very good full APS-C sensor, had THE WORST ergonomics and most TRULY retarded menu system I have ever encountered in ANY camera, making it utterly unusable to me. They wasted the touch screen and they really shouldn't have let a baboon write the camera's software.

And now, what the Nikon 1 series boasts about the most. The drastic claim made by Nikon that the 1 series focuses faster than ANY camera they have made seems pretty much like straight-up BS to me. Yes, it focuses fast. A little bit faster than my TS3 and I honestly couldn't tell any difference between it and my D5100 with standard 18-55mm lens. Yes, that's quite fast. But the Nikon 1's autofocus would probably get smoked vs. a D5100 with a pro lens or even a 35mm or 50mm f/1.8. It was pretty common to experience focus hunting on rather standard non-challenging subjects with the Nikon 1. It's a good and fast autofocus system. Particularly vs. PNS cameras that cost 1/3 as much or even less. If it truly is the fastest Nikon has ever put out, then I suspect Nikon has a LOT of cameras out there that focus 99% as fast because I could not detect any speed advantage over even my D5100 with cheapy standard lens and I KNOW the D3 focuses faster... I bet my FILM F6 and even F5 focus faster.

The Nikon 1's focus tracking was less impressive. It is definitely good. I can't deny that. But when claims like "best" are made, well... It was pretty much identical to the TS3's and D5100's. For the most part, it stays pretty well locked onto the subject but it's far from uncommon for the tracking to get tricked and to jump onto something else. It was no better than the TS3 or D5100 in this respect. It's good but not outstanding at all. In my opinion there is a LOT of room for improvement in all focus tracking systems.

Where the 1j1 truly excelled was in its monitor. Just reviewing photos, I couldn't even tell it from the D5100's monitor that had twice as many dots and it was a lot nicer than the TS3's. However, when framing a shot, its refresh rate is so high that moving the camera around results in NO choppiness or lag at all! It's like you're looking through a window, not a camera monitor! TRULY amazing. I have not seen ANY camera that can Live View as fluidly as the Nikon 1.

I did feel a little ripped off about the Nikon 1 10-30mm lens. It looks nice and compact in all the promo photos. It is NOT USABLE in that state. It is collapsed and locked for storage/transportation. It must be unlocked to take a picture and that telescopes the lens about an inch. Locking/unlocking the lens is not difficult but it's a pain and if you lock the lens, you WILL miss shots. If you leave the lens locked to save space, you should shoot a PNS instead. If you leave the lens unlocked, you might as well shoot a real camera.

Everything about the camera was plasticky. The lens felt about the same as the DX 18-55mm. That candy apple red 1j1 is FREAKING GORGEOUS though! I LOVED looking at it! I want to buy one just for the color. If I could have Nikon paint my DSLRs that color, they'd all be on a plane tomorrow!

In essence, all my preliminary assertions were pretty much spot on except that I actually initially gave the Nikon 1 MORE credit than it deserved. It truly is borderline unusable in the way that the NEX-5n IS unusable for seasoned photographers though both systems are probably fine for rich snapshooters that are perfectly happy pointing the camera in a general direction and letting the camera make all the decisions, providing generally acceptable results. If that's you, no problem, you'll like the Nikon 1 as it takes nice pictures. If not, the 1j1, and even more so the 1v1, is a camera that seriously doesn't make any sense to own by anybody other than a camera collector or someone who wants a toy or is fashion-conscious about their camera gear. It takes good-quality photos and looks cool but is plasticky, cheapy and has AWFUL ergonomics and menus. The 1j1 with 10-30mm lens is worth about $300-350. Not double that. There are a LOT of better cameras for less money. The 1v1 with no built-in flash isn't even worth owning regardless of price. It's not worth it to carry around or mount a bulky external flash to a camera that takes this caliber of photo. Its images are LITERALLY BARELY better than the TS3's at 100% resolution on a 27" monitor. I will bet you any amount you won't be able to tell ANY difference vs. the TS3 in prints up to 16x20 and maybe even larger. Lol at 4x6! At 4x6 the TS3 is way overkill already. The Nikon 1 series is literally in a lower league than the D5100. Seriously like college vs. NFL respectively. No contest in any way except that the Nikon 1's Live View is superior and shutter release in Live View on the D5100 is not as immediate. If you're like me and only use Live View on a DSLR for stationary objects while critically focusing, this Nikon 1 "advantage" is moot anyway, but it is neat.

JUST like my title states, Nikon 1 is NOT small, it is NOT inexpensive and it ABSOLUTELY IS NOT GREAT! Even less great than my initial impression. Nikon blew it. They need to put the D5100/D7000's sensor in a mirrorless that takes F-mount lenses and has D7000 (or at least D5100) controls and menus. THEN, I'm positive I'll buy one. Especially if it comes in that candy apple red! I'd take 2, just because! :O Now THAT thing would be an HDR MONSTER!

If you MUST buy a Nikon 1, get a 1j1, NOT a 1v1. If you're cool, get the red one. ;) If you are a Hello Kitty fan, get the pink one. If you're an Apple fan, get the white one. If you're snooty and/or boring and drive a snooty boring silver Mercedes, get the silver one. And if you're an experienced photographer who insists on "professional black," then, well, don't buy a Nikon 1 at all because you'll hate it! :D

END EDIT.

ORIGINAL REVIEW FOLLOWS...

My early conclusion with this new Nikon offering was that Nikon was looking to prey on wealthy suckers loyal to the Nikon brand who wanted something small and light and of quality... Even though it wasn't actually small or light and has plastic lens mounts just like cheapo DSLR kit lenses.

And for those of you who don't know, that cheapy plasticky Nikon kit 18-55 VR is a REALLY sharp and colorful lens with truly exceptional macro capability. It is a fantastic lens, is very light and relatively compact. A shortcoming is that the front element rotates.

What the 1V1 has is bragging rights to being expensive and at the top of one of Nikon's lines as opposed to being inexpensive and near the bottom of one of Nikon's lines as the D5100 is.

The breakdown vs. my own personal light gear:

NIKON 1v1 vs. LUMIX ZS7:

ZS7 was $235ish on Amazon when I got it, 1v1 with 2 zooms is $999 on Amazon after recent $150 price drop. SB-N5 flash costs $200. 1v1 costs $964 more (5.1x as expensive).

PRICE WIN: ZS7.

ZS7 weighs 218 grams and is a true pocket-sized camera, 1v1 weighs 409 grams with 10-30mm and 584 grams with both zooms and needs to be carried with a strap and a bag is needed for extra lens and 654 grams with both lenses and flash. 1v1 weighs 436 grams more (3x as heavy).

WEIGHT/BULK WIN: ZS7.

ZS7 has built-in Leica f/3.3-4.9 25-300mm equivalent range and minimum aperture of f/6.3 1v1 has plastic-mount Nikkor f/3.5-5.6 27-297mm equivalent range (carrying 2 lenses) with minimum aperture of f/16. Both cameras have tiny sensors so there will be substantial depth of field even wide open.

OPTICS WIN: If wide-open aperture is more important, ZS7 wins. If minimum aperture is more important, 1v1 wins.

ZS7 has a built-in GN 17.4ft flash, 1v1 has external $200 70g GN 27.9ft. flash.

FLASH WIN: If POWER is your concern and price, weight and bulk don't matter, 1v1 wins. If ZERO PRICE, SIZE AND WEIGHT INCREASE is your concern and power isn't, ZS7 wins.

ZS7 has good quick autofocus/focus-tracking. It is not infallible and sometimes gets tricked. 1v1's autofocus/focus-tracking is being greatly touted in the way DSLRs are. I'll accept at face value that it is superior to the ZS7.

AUTOFOCUS/TRACKING WIN: 1v1.

ZS7 has a 12.1MP 6.12mm x 4.51mm sensor and records JPG only. 1v1 has a 10.1MP 13.2mm x 8.8mm sensor and can record in RAW. 1v1's sensor is 4.2x as large as ZS7's.

IMAGE QUALITY WIN: 1v1. (Granted, I've never used the 1v1 but I will readily accept that its image quality is superior.)

SUMMARY: 1v1 is 5x as expensive, 3x as heavy, way more bulky (not a pocket camera), has a more powerful flash and better image quality and autofocus. ZS7 is 1/5 as expensive, 1/3 as heavy, is a legitimate pocket camera, has basic flash and very good JPG-only image quality.

NIKON 1v1 VS. NIKON D5100:

D5100 with 18-55mm VR, 55-300mm VR, Nikon camera bag and instructional videos cost $1008 at Costco including tax, 1v1 with 2 zooms is $999 and SB-N5 flash costs $200 on Amazon, $1199 in total. 1v1 costs $191 more (19% more).

PRICE WIN: D5100.

D5100 with 18-55mm lens weighs 796.3 grams with battery and AN-4Y strap (I weighed mine and it's substantially lower than Nikon's stats). Long lens weighs 580g, 1376.3g total. (To accurately match the 1v1's zoom range, Nikkor 55-200mm VR weighs 335g, 1131.3g total) 1v1 weighs 493g with 10-30mm and flash (and strap). Long lens weighs 175g, 668g total. D5100 with 18-55mm is 303.3 grams (0.62x) heavier than 1v1 with 10-30mm and flash. With flash mounted, the 1v1 is an awkward bulky shape.

WEIGHT WIN: 1v1.

BULK WIN: D5100.

D5100 has VR Nikkor f/3.5-5.6 27-450mm equivalent range in 2 zooms and the entire Nikkor 35mm, FX and DX lens catalog to select from. 1v1 has VR Nikkor f/3.5-5.6 27-297mm equivalent range in 2 zooms and a 10mm f/2.8 1-series fixed pancake lens to choose.

OPTICS WIN: The D5100 and Nikon 1 standard 27-82mm equivalent zoom lenses are both optically very good and both quite cheapy and plasticky and likely to eventually break if exposed to typical photographers' situations. Images are of equal quality. If you factor in expandability, D5100 wins by a light year!

The D5100's Live View autofocus/focus tracking is very fast and quite accurate. The 1v1 is also very fast and quite accurate.

AUTOFOCUS/TRACKING WIN: Tie. Nikon 1 autofocus is hyped way beyond reason. It's on par with DSLRs and that's about it. Same with tracking.

D5100 has built-in flash with Guide Number 43ft and standard Nikon hot shoe that can take any post-F3 Nikon-compatible flash. 1v1 has external 70g $200 SB-N5 flash with Guide Number 27.9ft.

FLASH WIN: D5100.

D5100 has a 16.2MP 23.6mm x 15.6mm sensor. The same sensor as the D7000 and produces very exceptional images. 1v1 has a 10.1MP 13.2mm x 8.8mm sensor. The D5100's sensor is 3.17x as large and widely regarded as the best APS-C sensor.

IMAGE QUALITY WIN: D5100.

SUMMARY: 1V1 costs $191 (19%) MORE and the body + standard zoom + flash weighs 303.3g (10.7oz. or 38.1%) less but is MORE bulky (with flash). It only has 2 lenses outside of the 2 standard zooms to choose from. The 10mm f/2.8 pancake lens is the same minimum focal length (!) as and only 2/3-stop (!) faster than the standard zoom. The other lens being a $750 slow f/4.5-5.6 10-100mm zoom that covers just short of the same range as the 2 standard zooms together. It costs about the same as and covers not quite the same equivalent range as the outstanding and revered Nikkor DX 18-200mm VR... but is 2/3-stop SLOWER wide open and not quite as long! The 1v1 ONLY has a $200 weaker-than-DSLR-pop-up GN 28ft awkwardly bulky flash as a lighting option! And Nikon didn't even have the sense to mount it on top of the finder (SLR-style) to get a little more height for organic red-eye reduction.

The D5100 costs $191 (16%) LESS, weighs 303.3g (10.7oz. or 61%) more, is SMALLER (vs. 1v1 with flash), has DSLR controls and is better at everything (photo, not video), has a full swivel/tilt screen, very extensive catalog of lenses and flashes to choose from and superior image quality.

I don't really know why anyone would buy a 1v1 over a D5100. Or even a D3100, for that matter. Somebody's going to have to explain this to me because a D5100 with 18-55mm is small and light already. The only thing I see that's intriguing about the 1v1 is the 10/30/60fps Electronic Hi continuous shooting mode. I think it would be cool for sports. Um, how often will this mode get used by someone buying a 1v1? Ever?

CONCLUSION: I personally think Nikon royally screwed up with the 1v1 (not necessarily Nikon 1/CX format) and it will go down as a total WTF failure in their history. The 1j1 is smaller, and less expensive than a small DSLR and not much bigger/heavier than a PNS but the 1v1 with flash is bulky and WAY overpriced. The 1j1 with both standard zooms and built-in flash for $746.95 here at Amazon is interesting... Potential there. I would rather have the 1j1 with those 2 lenses than the 1v1 with those lenses AND flash, at whatever price. I just don't want the 1v1 at any price. The 1v1 killed itself with no internal flash, period. If I'm gonna carry or mount an external flash out of NECESSITY, it won't be for/on a tiny sensor camera. Lol, aside from the 1v1 and top-end DSLRs, I cannot think of a digital camera that doesn't have a built-in flash... The 1j1 is a better camera and it's WAY cheaper ($764.95 vs. $1199 for 1v1, 2 zooms & flash) as you don't need to buy and mount a bulky external flash.

And what about vs. the Nikon P7100? P7100 comes with built-in 28-200mm equivalent lens, built-in flash, can take REAL Nikon Speedlights with GNs WAY above 27.9 and/or less expensive than $200, shoots RAW, has great image quality, is built tough, is almost a pocket camera, has a tilt screen and is less than half as costly...

But I'm sure there will be those who love the 1v1 and I'm happy for everyone who finds something they love. :)

Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom Lens,5.0 out of 5 stars Great upgrade from Rebel line, November 30, 2011

Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom LensI love this camera. I just got it for 2 days. I started with a Rebel XS about 2 years ago. This is an upgrade I would never ever regret. The camera is solid when holding. The weight is nice too. Not too heavy (I hold a 7D borrowed from a friend, too heavy for me). I'm not a professional at all, nor a pro-sumer. I just love to take nice picture. The menu and the knob are pretty nice. A lot of people said they don't like the Lock on the MODE knob. I don't care. I either leave it at AV forever, or manual if I have to.
I love the Q-menu, and also the ability to customize the AF menu.
Most of my pictures go to facebook, or stay in my computer, so the high ISO doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I love it, since I can take nicer picture in low light not. I gave it a try last night, the result is very impressive.

Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens,4.0 out of 5 stars Of the economic SLR cameras, this one is the best followed by the Nikon D3100. ...

Nikon D3000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom LensOf the economic SLR cameras, this one is the best followed by the Nikon D3100. The diference between this one and the D3100 is that the other one includes HD video.

I have always loved taking pictures and overnight I just wanted to start taking landscape photography, I didn't knew to much about cameras so I went to the store and they recommended to me the Nikon coolpix P500 just because I was not a pro. I bought it for 450 and I found the camera to be complicated not to mention that when I did my research I could get a Professional SLR camera for only a 100 buck more. I returned it an bought the Nikon D3000 and boy it was easier to use than the coolpix P500 plus the quality of pictures of course are way better.

I find this camera very easy to use and the pictures are amazing especially if you take pictures in valleys and mountains, is like the color green is this camera's best friend!!! With that being said I also took pictures on the beach on a cloudy morning and the pictures came out very grainy to the point were they look like a picture taken with a cheap cellphone. Seems like the camera does not work to good in low light. Other than that I have no complains.

Overall this is a very good camera and if you have kids or pets that are constantly moving you must have this camera!! I also took pictures of dogs running and they came crisp and clear no blurry at all. the rain looks AMAZING it just frizzes the drops and they look like sparkly diamonds falling just pretty!!

If you have have a few bucks more I would suggest you buying the D3100 because you get the video too!!

Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor Lens,1. ...

Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor LensI can only reiterate the same issues many people have discussed on many websites. I started with a D50 then D90. I had sharp photos with my D90 and never did the AF "say" (or show) that it is focused on a persons face, yet the only sharp spot in the picture is a random object behind the subject and primarily to the left side. I have had this D7000 for a year now and I am at the end of my rope. I wish I still had my D90. I have used the D7000 in all situations and all the settings, colors are lacking, noise is extreme --- even at an ISO of 100 in daylight, the noise is obvious. I have fine tuned all of my lenses to the 20 setting in order to compensate for the back focus issues (often it's not quite enough!). For the concert photography, I take 3x's as many photos to get the few good ones that will be in focus. There just isn't time to manually focus when a band is playing. Can't wait to get rid of this camera. I'm going to rent a Cannon and see what happens. I haven't ever used one, but it's time to start looking at other options.

Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom Lens,5.0 out of 5 stars Camera that is worth the money, November 29, 2011

Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom LensYou put this camera in your hand and you know you are holding a quality product. Takes great pictures and is capable of most adjustments if you know what to adjust. We prefer the auto mode which takes care of the hassle but many settings are available if desired. Especially like the large LCD panel that can be rotated if desired. To get maximum benefit out of this camera I recommend reading the manual from front to cover. This can be a simple point and shot camera but if you want to achieve the maximum potential you definately need to become familiar with all aspects of its capability. This is not a small camera but fills the hand when holding it and it does have a solid but not heavy feel. Also the menus are very easy to read and understand. Very user friendly. Very impressed so far. The wife and I are not professional camera buffs but just like to take good pictures without too much trouble. This camera has been just the ticket for us. Have owned many Canon products and have yet to be disappointed.

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only),5.0 out of 5 stars Pentax K-5 What "Pros" don't know, October 10, 2011

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only)My first SLR some 50+ years ago was a Pentax and we owe a lot to those cameras today. I've owned or shot with every brand that you can name and I'll take the K-5 over all the others. The N & C brands have more lenses but not necessarily better lenses, I like the Pentax glass. I have a 40 year old (?) 55mm f1.8 mf lens and it's really sharp. The K-5 has good HDR builtin and IR. Rain proof, built like a tank, every lens I put on it is stabilized and Did I mention the built in level or the sensor shift. Try that with other brands. Buy it if you want the best.

Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom Lens,3.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing camera, November 28, 2011

Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom LensPurchased the EOS 60D with 18-135 lens kit based on so many good comments.

What a mistake! On the first day of test using fully automatic setting, I noticed
gradual distortion between 28 mm to 18 mm at ISO 100 to 400. Noticeble distortion begin to appear near the center focus at 28 mm and worsens when widening to 18mm.

I did a quick seach on the web for 60D distortion, CNET has a review reporting same issue with unkind comments:
[...]

The reviewer used a statue which for an untrained eye is very difficult to
recognize and appreciate the distortion. In my case, I used vertical blinds as test object.

At ISO less than 400, a $1200 DSLR should be prefect in every shot. A $1200 DSLR has near center distortion is completely unacceptable!

The EOS utility 2.10.2.0 is useless when used with Windows 7 pro. I have to take my old XP out of garage attic to get the photos off the new 60D and play with its remote features.

60D takes great looking picures, but are they truthful? No metter how good, how expensive the construction feels; a camera's top priority is taking realistic photos. PERIOD.

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only),4.0 out of 5 stars PENTAX K5 vs the D7000 had both..., October 12, 2011

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only)I saw all the rave reviews from both buyers and camera review sites on the K5 so I just had to have it. I recently sold my Nikon D90 and was in need of an upgrade.

The ergonomics of the K5 are JUST great. It makes you want to pick it up and use it. The weight, the solid build, LCD, and all the buttons seem to be in the right place REALLY great. A sort of non issue, out of the box I had two hot pixels. Thanks though to the in camera pixel mapping a BIG advantage over the Nikon D7000, I had a perfect camera in seconds after just clicking pixel remap.

My problems with the K5 are I had way too many pictures where it focused behind what I wanted IT to focus on, OR focused REALLY on nothing. Despite the fact it LOOKED focused in either the viewfinder and or live view. I set it to one point certainly not multi. (I shot a lot of People shots) Unless I was very close to the subject(s) OR "if the subject didn't have a lot of things close by behind" like trees etc.,over and over the K5 had really focused behind my target.

I tend to shoot a lot in places of nature like Arboretums etc..so it's then when I noticed the most out of focus shots, when the background was sort of busy. If I was shooting a portrait shot, say by the Ocean, I always had PERFECT sharp focus as there was nothing CLOSE behind my subject like a tree obviously.

Another thing that bothered me on the K5 was it's OVERALL rendition of skin tones. I know certain settings are out of the box too saturated with too much contrast but most pictures no matter what I did, had unrealistic skin tones.

In raw I was usually able to get VERY good skin tone but I hated to ALWAYS have to manipulate nearly every picture I took in order to get realistic looking skin tones.

Fast Forward, I was getting frustrated with the focus and COLOR accuracy. I picked up a Nikon D7000 and without doing a whole review, without question the D7000 had way better accurate auto focus in most situations, and much better looking ACCURATE color, especially skin tones. (This was MY experience don't shoot the messenger :))

Long story short without a doubt I enjoyed the overall feel and customization level much more on the K5 vs the Nikon. Also high ISO goes to the K5. As to grain or Chroma noise my tests showed the K5 was the winner over the D7000 which was close.

However due to the focus and skin tone issues I sadly returned my K5 and will be keeping the D7000. There is no doubt the Pentax is a SUPER great camera. I suppose if you enjoy a ton of post processing it will reward you big time. The auto focus issue? I don't know..I missed far too many shots that should have been in focus..and that's probably the main reason I chose the D7000 over the Pentax.

This is just my opinion, and from what I've read the K5 usually comes up the winner. However due to the issues I listed at least in my case, the D7000 was the better camera for ME though not ergonomically. Also as far as the initial kit lenses go, if you buy these cameras with the kit lens..the K5'S lens will show MUCH more purple fringing, The D7000 wins again on the kit lens. Not an issue if you plan to buy some good glass as they say with your camera. All said though, the K5 is a great camera, but you may want to try a D7000 and see if it may not be the better camera in the REAL WORLD..Not dxo charts, shooting manikins in a studio, and all that sort of thing.

I know there are some die hard Pentax people out there I can see why, as Pentax seems riddled with QUALITY and is a bit DIFFERENT than the same old boring? Nikon/ Canons. I am actually the type who PREFERS to be different, (I have an X100 LOVE IT!! I won't even go there now). I WANTED to choose the K5 over the D7000 but my pictures wouldn't let me do that..JUST my eyes and opinion.

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only),5.0 out of 5 stars Love it but a small problem to be aware of, October 26, 2011

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only)I absolutely love this camera. I had the K10D and loved that too, but this is a much finer piece of craftsmanship. I won't bother reviewing the details of the camera because others have done it much better.

There is just one thing to be aware of.. the LCD screen seems to have a poor seal and lets in dust and/or sand. I returned my first body due to this problem and they gave me a new one, but it seems this body also has that problem. I have been careful and always have it around my neck, don't leave it on the ground or anything like that. I thought that maybe the first time it was because I was at some sand dunes, however I have not been to one with the new camera. I do live in New Mexico which is more dusty than most places so that may explain it.

I put a piece of static plastic over it to see if that helps keep out the dust. It's still usable of course but the sand does make it a bit hard to see the screen in the sun.

I hope you don't have this problem too but I'd be curious if anyone does. I am still giving it 5 stars because it deserves it. It's so much nicer to me than a big old fancy Canon.

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only),5.0 out of 5 stars Switched from a Canon 7D to the Pentax K5, October 29, 2011

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only)Hi I switched 2 months ago from a Canon 7D with a 24-105mm L lens and I have to say that I have no regrets, I wanted a lighter camera that was rugged and at the same time took great pictures and had semi-pro features, at the beginning being a Canon user and before it a Nikon one I was a bit skeptical but after using the camera for a bit I started loving it, I mistook it's simplicity to it being inferior but I was wrong it only makes it more user friendly, such a nice camera to use, the 7D is a great camera but besides it being heavy and almost giving me hernia it also feels like a computer with the K5 I can now concentrate on photography. I use it with 40 and 70mm limiteds, it was as well a learning curve using primes but no regrets whatsoever, good job Pentax, maybe a full frame in the future!

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only),5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest camera body out there, November 12, 2011

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only)Their are 3 reasons I say this:
1) The image quality is surpassed by none! The dynamic range is unbelievable at iso 80. Plus the high iso is astonashing: I can shoot up to iso 3200 no problem and even use iso 12800 when needed!!!
2) The build quality is amazing. Built like a brick, incredibly small, and can survive a monsoon! I took this thing into the alaska rain and survived wthout a sweat
3) The ergonomics make this the easiest camera to use if you know what you are doing. If you like to constantly change the EV, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, continuous shoting, or manual focus then this is the camera for you! I remember being able to do all of this in like 10 min.

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only),5.0 out of 5 stars One word AWESOME!, November 13, 2011

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only)There is not enough words or stars to describe this camera. I've used both the k10/ 20d cameras and the k5 shines sweet! The kit lens alone could be in a category all it's own. The camera with the kit lens focuses quick and the quality of the photos is superb! I'm a big guy with huge basketball hands and the camera fits nicely in my hands, which was a concern when I was thinking of purchasing this camera and I must say I'm not disappointed! The 7fps is awesome, I love taking pics of my 4yr old playing tennis and with the increased fps the camera has already paid for its self! The down side is you will need to get plenty of memory cards because if your like me you will be holding down the shutter button often because it's so much fun! I absolutely love taking pics with this camera! If you are looking for an awesome camera to take around with you without worrying about getting it wet and taking superb pictures then look no further! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only),5.0 out of 5 stars rugged high performance DSLR = the Pentax k5, November 27, 2011

Pentax K-5 16.3 MP Digital SLR with 3-Inch LCD (Black Body Only)This is the third weather sealed Pentax I've owned and I'm happy to say that I have full confidence in Pentax's ability to make a camera that I can take anywhere. Rain storms, freezing rain, snow and blowing sand will not slow me down. Other camera owners dive for cover while I get the shots.
And it's not just about how rugged the k5 is built - it's comfortable, very customizable, responsive and takes great images, even at iso 25600!
The grip is awesome... it feels attached to my hand and it makes it easier to hold over long periods. Plus, it actually feels lighter than what it is - I think it's how the weight is distributed, but it's what ergonomics is about.
I love how I can reassign what a button does, or what a control wheel controls. For example, if I'm in AV mode (aperture priority), I can assign the the front wheel or rear wheel to change the aperture while the other wheel can control exposure compensation, iso, or nothing at all.
It focuses quickly, does well at tracking and shoots quickly and quietly. This last point is interesting... the k5 is a small camera and Pentax lenses tend to be smaller and lighter than their competition, especially when you look at their prime lenses. I've noticed when using my larger lenses, the people I'm taking a picture of react much differently than when I use smaller lenses. When a smaller lens is on the camera, they are more relaxed and are less likely to know that I'm taking pictures of them. Plus with the camera shutter being very quiet, I can keep taking photos and they are likely not even aware that I'm taking pictures. I love taking candid pictures since peoples reactions are much more natural. The Pentax K5 helps me get these shots.
Taking pictures indoors can be such a challenge - lighting in most areas is very low which presents photographers with many challenges. Often times it means shooting at a large aperture which means the depth of field will be very shallow - one person may be in focus, but the person next to them won't be. Or shutter speed needs to be dropped which means if your subject moves, you'll get motion blur or even if your subject is still, it makes keeping the camera still enough difficult. And another compromise that can be used is to raise the ISO (sensitivity) higher that often induces static or noise to the image. Pentax has addressed these issues head on. First, the Pentax K5 has image stabilization built in, so if you are shooting at low shutter speeds, you are much more likely to get a sharp image. The rule of thumb has been the shutter speed should equal or greater than the focal length (in 35mm equivalence). So if you're shooting with a 50mm lens and since the Pentax has a crop factor of 1.5, it has a 75mm focal length so I should shoot at 1/75th or higher to get a sharp image. But with the k5 I regularly shoot at 1/20th with a 50mm lens without issue. That means I can decrease the aperture for more depth of field and or reduce the iso to decrease noise.
But the amazing thing is how little of a penalty there is for increasing the ISO on the Pentax K5. I found myself shooting in a very dimly lit Tango Dance Studio where I was needing to keep the shutter speeds at 1/100th or more since people were dancing while keeping the aperture set to f2.8 or higher. This meant I had to shoot at iso 25600 and a lot of those shots were absolutely useable! My previous cameras, I was hesitant to shoot at even iso 3200 because the noise became such a problem. But the K5 has such low chroma noise, the noise reduction feature in Lightroom 3 makes images at this high ISO useable. That's one thing I noticed on my uncles Nikon D7000 - at h4 (iso 25600), the Nikon had much more chroma noise than my pictures with the Pentax k5. And chroma noise is much harder to get rid of and makes images much less appealing.
All in all, I'm so excited about having the k5. Indoor or night shooting will be much easier. Macro shooting will be easier since I can raise the ISO so I can either increase the shutter speed or increase the aperture without penalty. When I'm people shooting, I can be stealthier with a smaller camera that is very quiet. My back will be happier when I go hiking because my gear is smaller and lighter. And I don't have to cower away from nature since I know my gear is up to taking most of what mother nature has waiting for me. Pentax has made an amazing camera that is worthy of all the awards its getting. And I know I'm so lucky to own one!

Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom Lens,5.0 out of 5 stars Coming from T1i to 60d, November 28, 2011

Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom LensI have used Canon T1i for over year and realized a need for change as two new generations(T2i/T3i) have come and selling my old will be pain after sometime. I was not considering T3i as I wanted to leap to next level. I had doubts in my mind about 60d(bigger, heavier, costlier etc). I held 60D in my hands at local bestbuy store and it felt very heavy(also due to wierd attachments to base of camera).

I went ahead and ordered my 60D, hoping for good. And it turns out to be BEST!!. Weight is very ideal, grip is very nice(I don't have big hands) and much better than T3i(tried at store) or my T1i. Camera though plastic(as mostly said) feels solid and should hold good for years of normal use. Out of box picture quality is amazing and a leap from my old T1i. I am not fan of in-built flash use and that's where 60D gives me advantage of clicking without flash in low light, pictures are turning out to be great(without flash if you mind :) ).

Couple more quick things that I appreciate over Rebel's:
1) Most settings are visible on screen and not hidden under menu. Less fumbling.
2) Focusing is quicker than my T1i and I love that I can change focus points quickly in advance modes.
3) Battery is a power horse. Try to exhaust it!!
4) Top LCD is very handy and I like the nice shortcut to light it up in dark.
5) It has few other advance modes like Bulb, wireless flash etc but I haven't used yet. Good to have :)

Abosolutely recommended. Get yours !!

Do get yourself 60D book(I have snapshot to great shot) or others, they are must to get full juice out of camera.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens,5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect camera for me, November 28, 2011

Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS LensI have been looking for a good camera (and saving money each week). I purchased the Canon EOS Rebel T2i mainly because it took 18 Megapixels. I know a lot of people don't think this is of the ultimate importance but the camera I have now are less than 10 megapixels. The difference for me is quite remarkable. My sister even noticed the difference this week when I sent her a couple of shots. She usually doesn't say anything about my pictures but this time she asked what kind of a camera did I take that picture with today.

I also wanted the look and feel of a SLR camera. It gives you more flexibility with what you shoot and how you shoot it. I know how to use most of the features from using other cameras but the EOS has a few more that I am anxious to learn.

Another plus when using this camera is that you look like a photographer. It really gives you style :)

Nikon 1 V1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10mm and 10-30mm VR 1 NIKKOR LensesFirst and foremost if you're looking for a consumer grade camera capable of shooting high quality images, I would not recommend this camera. Quality cameras can be had for less.

The camera has great focus, its very very fast at 10 frames per seconds, great for shooting your child's sporting activities. The camera also has good noise control when shooting in low light!

If you're looking for a quality camera in the rangefinder class, consier the Fujifilm X10 or the Sony NEX-5N which are in the same class, lower price, and similar features if not more.

Nikon 1 V1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10mm and 10-30mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses,5.0 out of 5 stars Poor man's Leica M9, November 6, 2011

Nikon 1 V1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10mm and 10-30mm VR 1 NIKKOR LensesThis camera has freed me from SLR bondage. I understand now why many pro photographers sold their high end DSLR's and bought a Leica m9 rangefinder digital. Four years in development, this camera hits a grand slam for Nikon and I believe it's a game changer.

Forget the armchair quarterbacks bemoaning the small sensor. It's good enough. Better than my d200 and about on par with my d300 without going under the microscope.

The genius of the 2.7 crop is the tiny, tack sharp lenses. Yes, they're a bit slow but that's what the higher ISO is for. This camera has a useable 3200 speed. The lenses probably have in-camera correction for various aberrations since you cannot see any chromatic aberration. none. Even wide open. They are sharp, sharp, sharp. Again, I think with the processing power available that this camera applies barrel and pincushion correction. Just my humble opinion.

You have HD video. You have 1200 fps slow motion. There are a ton of cool gadgets here. Leave your video camera at home? Well, no, if it's a high end Canon in the $3k up range. But if you've forgotten it, you won't feel disarmed. In firearms parlance, this is an excellent backup to your real weapon, and it's in a major caliber.

To fully "get" this camera, order the 10mm fixed prime. You then have a tiny, pocketable powerhouse that forces you to work on framing and composition. If you have dabbled in photography for 35 years like I have, you will understand what Nikon was going for with this camera- freedom. No heavy body and gaggle of lenses in a bag. I bet you'll shoot much more, since you'll have it with you. The first rule of photography is to have a camera with you.

You can fully control this camera. It's not as easy as it should be. Going back to full auto takes too many steps. But it can be done. It's almost as if the camera is forcing you to slow down and think about what you're doing.

Build quality is amazing. I own Rolex watches not because they are accurate, but because they are amazing mechanical devices that are impeccably built and engineered. This body exudes that quality. The lenses are plastic, and so a bit of a letdown tactilely, but movement of the zoom is fluid and feels expensive. I hope someone makes a Leica M adapter for these bodies; they deserve nothing less.

Nitpicks? Lack of short depth of field. That's it so far.

Will housewives like this? Yes. But there are other cameras cheaper that will satisfy them. This is a camera for someone who already understands photography. One who owns many SLR and DSLR bodies and lenses. One who knows what a camera can do. But one who is looking for freedom. Freedom from menus and buttons. Freedom to express and grow.

Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (White),2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad if you want to use it as a point-and-shoot., November 28, 2011

Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (White)I owned this camera for a week before taking it back. I'm not a professional, but I know a bad picture when I see one. All of the pictures I took on the camera looked great... until I transfered them to my computer. Blurry, unfocused pictures was what I saw over and over. The only good pictures I saw were the ones taken outside with lots of light, and to be honest, they weren't any better than the same pictures taken with my 5-year old Sony Cybershot. The auto ISO does not adjust well on this camera, so if you're inside, you probably need the flash to get any kind of decent picture without blur and graininess. I took over 500 pictures in a week of owning this camera, and over 30 minutes of footage. I adjusted every setting possible and tried all types of pictures in all types of light. I maybe got a handful of good pictures out of this camera and they were all in good light.

The video looked great, but if you're recording, you better have your camera on a tripod or be holding it really still, because every tiny movement is a huge jerk on this camera. The videos I recorded turned out absolutely awful (besides the picture because it's 1080p).

The reason I bought this camera was so that I could have some of the luxuries of a dSLR without the bulky body. I was looking forward to all of the features this camera was supposed to offer. I was excited that you could take a picture while recording video and take up to 60fps. But, honestly, I wouldn't trade a good photo for this camera. If you're looking for an overpriced point-and-shoot, this might be the camera for you, but for the same price, get a dSLR, or save yourself some money and buy something else! It's not worth the price.
