I was a complete novice to DSLR technology when I purchased the D5100. But after EXTENSIVE research through many websites including [...], I decided to go with the D5100. WOW! I couldn't have done better for the money! This camera produces awesome pictures. The battery lasts a very long time. The multiple exposures speed is very quick for this level of model. My ONLY change to this model would be to add the Auto Focus motor to drive the AF on non AF-S lenses. I know the D7000 can do this with the same sensor. I just couldn't spend the extra $$$ at the time. I was convinced to enter a few of my early pictures into a local photo contest. To my disbelief, I took first and second place!
Buy this camera, you won't be disappointed! Just please do yourself a favor, and take a beginning DSLR class or ? to get yourself out of the AUTO mode and into Aperture or Shutter Priority modes.
