Before purchasing, I compared it with the Canon T3i and T3i and the Nikon D3100. The Canon cameras felt plasticy and cheap and the D5100 had the processor and sensor of the higher-end premium Nikon cameras (the D7000 and D90).
I like the video capabilities, though they are not what I use it for primarily.
The time lapse feature is well done and easy to use.
The only complaint that I have is the (minor) noise generated by the (continual) auto-focus motor during video capture. That can be a pain. However, if you set it to manual focus mode, there is no problem.
When you purchase this camera, be sure to get a good tripod, polarizing filter, UV filter, backup battery, and extra storage card.
